Geography - parts of a river

We have been learning about the features of a river in geography and made our own models of a river using tissue paper and cardboard which showed all the different features. We all really enjoyed this and are proud of our work!

Science

We have been learning about plants in science this term and recently learnt the parts of a flower by dissecting lilies in groups.

Henley River and Rowing Museum Trip - 17/6/25

On Tuesday 17th June, Sycamore Class went on a trip to Henley River and Rowing Museum. This links with our current rivers topic in Geography.

When we arrived, we started the day by going on a guided river walk along the River Thames and over a bridge to the lock where we watched the water rise as the boats were going uphill. We learnt that it goes down if they go downhill. Along the walk, we waved at many people on boats in the water and learnt about the small island in the middle of the River Thames opposite the museum and how they get to other places and get their post. We also saw some swans with their cygnets and some Egyptian geese.

After a quick break for a snack and a drink, we then had time to explore the galleries before lunch. We learnt about rivers, rowing and also enjoyed walking through and exploring the 'Wind in the Willows' exhibit.

In the afternoon, after our picnic lunch on the meadow next to the River Thames, we took part in an 'Understanding Rivers' workshop where there were different activities for us to try. This included deciding whether materials are permeable or impermeable, seeing the affect water has on sand and stones in the river and deciding which category items from history would be grouped into.

We had a wonderful day at Henley River and Rowing Museum and will be recounting our day over the next couple of weeks in English. We will also be using some of the knowledge we learned today in our geography lessons.

Art - sculptures

In art last term, we started looking at sculptures. This linked to our learning about the Ancient Greeks. We started by looking at a sculpture called 'Discobolus' by Ancient Greek sculptor Myron and then compared it to a sculpture called 'City Square' by Alberto Giacometti. Inspired by Giacometti's work, we have designed and created our own sculptures using tin foil.

We started by trying out some modelling techniques using the foil and then moved onto making our sculptures!
