Phonics

The Teaching of Phonics is paramount in early reading and writing and we teach systematic, carefully planned tailored sessions every day in Oak, Birch, Elm and Horse Chestnut classes.

From September 2020, we have adopted the Read, Write Inc Scheme to teach phonics. This scheme groups the children by ability, taking a 'stage not age' approach to their learning of phonics. The use of Read Write Inc replaces our previous approach which combined Letters and Sounds. Teachers and Jolly Phonics, to ensure that we have a whole-school approach to reading.

Children in KS2 also receive specific phonics sessions where necessary, and generalised phonic sessions through spelling teaching each week. We also undertake whole-class reading across Key Stage Two, using high quality, challenging texts. This encourages children to engage and discuss texts, whilst accessing books that they may not normally choose.

The children's early reading is supported by the Read Write Inc reading books that are split between the 'learning to read' and the 'loving to read' texts to support our children's progress and attitude to reading.

Click the document at the bottom of this page for a copy of the phonics workshop delivered to parents in February 2020. This predates our use of Read, Write Inc, and therefore more parent information will be shared on this page through the autumn term in 2020.
